Sex Drive to No Where

Sex. Don't raise alarm or report to online porn busters to clamp this site down. I mean, isn't it hypocritical, that this is the one thing that occupies young people's minds very persistently , yet when u even say the word out loud, people give u that wide-eyed, incredulous stare as how historians react to the insinuation that Alexander the Great was a bisexual in the movie Alexander. * Gasp!*. The S** word. Hush , hush, S** is such a taboo, as thinking, emotions-driven humans, we should surpass physicality to honour intellectual/emotional connection. That sets us apart from animals u knowwwww.

Very well then. So u have it. There has been such a furore in the newspapers recently, on the discussion on how Singapore tops the international chart again, this time from bottom up, on the frequency of sex table at 79 times a year in a Durex sex survey polling 41 countries and 350,000 people. The article, "Sex Drive to No Where" (article not available online, read this related article instead, but need to register with straits times first, hee) cited working stress, relationhip problems and low libido as possible reasons. That is excluding the newly-entered Japan, at 46 times a year. This may be bad news for Lee Hsien Loong, whose pro- procreation policy is rigorously underway, and the launching of an official 5-day-work-week policy is targeting that promoting more "family time" but more like ahumm, "home production", hee.

In our Asian context, sex education is sorely lacking, our traditional values put a overhanging cleaver in our mindset to portray sex in association with concepts such as "forbidden", "shameful","tainted", "baby-making-exercise" etc. And the school's version of sex education harps on our fear conscience by showing us a gory video on abortion, the one likely consequence of committing irresponsible sexual acts. My parents never once told us anything about it, we are thrown into the sea and expected to know how to swim by the time we get married, by hook or by crook. But don't watch porn, they would warn, it is "corrupting" the mind, don't read magazines with sexual content, it is also "corrupting", but u must produce enough babies to exceed the current 2.1 replacement rate. Great, and now i am expected to know how to do water-synchronisation without being even taught how to swim in the first place. That is how ironic our society is.

Our curiosity gets the better of us, luckily, as we learn about this course of nature that perpetuates humans' continual propagation for the past millions of years, by discussing it with experienced,or open-minded friends and reading up whatever materials available to us. But during the course of finding and learning, there is still a ghost of shame that is haunting within us, lamenting how we can be more inquisitive about S** than say, the number of Sudanese dying in Darfur now.

In fact, there is nothing to be ashame about. To discuss about sex in a candid, civilised manner. It doesn't have to be racy, illicit or vulgar, which constitute the essence of porn. It can be educational , enlightening and helps to mentally prepare people who are ready to enter into a physical relationship. My friend and I had a discussion over dinner today and we both agree that Asian youths need to be more exposed to this side of knowledge. Moreover, to most girls, sex is very much a commitment stemming from a strong emotion connection with someone else. Women equate sex to love , in general, while i can't say with equal confidence if it is true for men.

We definitely need more candidness and maturity in our society where the topic of sex is concerned. Surpression and avoidance only lead to the built-up of tension below the surface that may serves to trigger the onset of sex crimes, increase in STDs and probably unwanted pregnancies.

So no more hush hush, shall we?
